Graphic artist - business comms designer (Amesbury)

Tue, 09/07/2010 - 17:33
SUMMARY
Small, growing writing and graphics firm serving some of the largest management consulting, high tech, and biotechnology companies seeks digital illustrator and visual information specialist to create both high-end and routine graphics for business publications, presentations, and other business communications.

ABOUT THE COMPANY
The Strategy and Methods Laboratory (SAM-LAB) is located in Amesbury, MA, serving clients globally. We create intellectual capital such as whitepapers, published articles, keynote presentations and sales materials on complex business themes such as customer relationship management, branding, knowledge management, M&A strategy, supply chain management, product strategy, and business intelligence. The materials we produce are used by our clients to market their perspectives and services. Our main clients are large management consulting companies, software giants, and biotech companies.

THE JOB

Task 1 (50%) In support of our core business, artist will need to interpret business concepts into abstract and representative high-end business illustrations for use in business communications. These graphics will be high-impact drawings, typically done in photoshop comps and vector source apps.

Task 2 (50%) In support of our core business, the production artist will need to draw and edit standard business graphics (think boxes, arrows, bar charts, Venns, Gantts, lots of text, process flows, continuums, etc.) in Powerpoint and MS Word for demanding and sophisticated clients. Attention to detail a must. These activities will represent a larger proportion of the workload early on, with tasks shifting to higher-end illustration as the business grows.

The job will require working from home almost exclusively. This will require a strong work discipline and a very independent candidate. The employee will be required to be in the Amesbury office full time during the first 1-2 week training period.

Pay is entry level (undergrad degree) to moderate experience (< 3 years experience) (likely in the twenties or thirties). There will be many opportunities for advancement and pay raises for the right person.

IMPORTANT: Health insurance is NOT provided. Employee will have to make their own arrangements

THE PERSON WE ARE SEEKING
We are looking for a motivated, active dual-brained person who is creative and inventive, while also able to grasp very complex and analytical business concepts. Applicant should be able to understand a business concept and then use creative skills to create the right, compelling image. Success here is not about artistry (although creativity is a must) but about the best display of story and information.

This said, candidate should be able to draw some pretty decent things using a computer. Photoshop and PowerPoint are musts. Poser experience would be grand, but could be taught to the right person. Using InDesign to layout brochures/ads is sometimes needed but not central. Application should feel comfortable in MS Word and Excel.

Please make no mistake: We do not shy away from tedious, businessy, and otherwise painfully plain presentation editing, and the artists here will need to happily attack these assignments with the same level of quality and attention to detail as the more challenging assignments.

New grads encouraged to apply. All majors welcome.

APPLYING:

Before applying, please download the sample file:
http://www.sam-lab.com/sample/slsamples.pdf

Then ask yourself two questions:
“Am I able or could I learn to draw images like these on a computer?”
“Would I like to have a job drawing these types of images?”

Send your resume and work samples to careers@sam-lab.com. Please indicate in your cover letter or email message that you have looked at the sample file referenced above by writing “I have downloaded and reviewed the sample file.” in your note.
