Assistants and Second Shooters are two different occupations. Assistants assist. They are there to move lights, keep cords neat and out of the way, hold reflectors, take readings, police the ground for distracting elements, make clothing adjustments, etc. The only time they have a camera in their hands is to change lenses, batteries, and memory cards (or film).

Second Shooters are typically working independently - if the key photographer is doing group shots, second shooters are capturing candids (or vice versa). Often second shooters are as equally skilled as the 1st shooter and most often have a complementary style. With wedding photographers, they are usually business partners as well.

So what's your story? If you have the balls to advertise for an assistant, then be prepared to pay. If you're looking for a second shooter, then you should be sharing the job. Since you're not doing that, you must be a hack.

I pity the bride that hired your sorry ass, but I suppose she found you on this very website and you're probably giving away your work. Boo fucking hoo. Grow up and learn the trade you yahoo.

Our non-profit organization is looking for a photographer who is willing to volunteer and take pictures of our HUGE annual fundraising event. We do not have the budget for a photographer but are willing to negotiate some compensation including cover the cost of parking and meals for the event.

New clothing/lingerie brand part of braoder website needs a body model, for t-shirts and panties. Moderate implied nude at most (meaning nothing showing but maybe topless with arms covering or back facing to showcase the panties). Need attractive young model, preferably over 5'6", under 25, thin to curvy figure, comfortable modeling (will consider all that respond, however). I am a research assistant doing a project in Psychology, and I need a short 1 to 2 minute video made that basically consists of about 30-40 images that inspire a certain feeling/emotion (I will give you more information), and I need it set to music. Requirements... Must have own DSLR with a top mounted or bracketed flash, preferably a NIKON. (for $150.00 you have no right as to tell the photographer what you want)
Must be available on 9/26 from 10-3:30 as well as a rain date of 10/3. (5 hours for $150?, really?)
Experience with team photography a plus... We have a system in place to assure consistency throughout the images so you must be able to follow direction. (Program mode, right?)
I would like to meet with each prospective photographer prior to the event to go over the details. (Nobody wants to meet with you for $150)

Possibility this could lead to future wedding/event and portrait work. (More cheap work)

I find it ironic that you knock on this person for trying to start out as a photographer the very same way you did. You admit that you would have used Craigslist if it had existed when you were getting into photography. What makes this person so much different from the you from 16 years ago? I don't get it.

As a fellow photographer, one thing I've always loved about the photographic community is that the vast majority has a sincere desire to help other people learn and hone their craft. If you've been in this business for so long, why don't you offer some advice instead of busting on him/her for trying to get better? Wouldn't that be much more constructive? If they lack the skills, then their business will reflect that. Your attitude and elitism isn't necessary or helpful...
