Should I Share my Source Code with a Client to be Considered for a Freelance Job?

A very reputable company that I would love to work with just asked to see some of my source code.  I'm asking myself if they want to see my bank statements too?

If a restaurant was looking for a new chef, would they ask for a few recipes before considering them for the job.

Im not sure about this one.  And I think that the question puts me off.
